Students in FIU’s After-School All-Stars program at Bowman Ashe Doolin Middle School had a chance to see a different side of Zoo Miami. After-School All-Stars partner Metro by T-Mobile offered students a career exploration day. Students spent time with a number of key zoo staff members to learn what it takes to run a zoo.

The senior staff members explained the importance of the food for each animal and how it’s prepared and disseminated around the zoo. Students learned how even the insects that are fed to birds and more are given nutrients to make sure all animals are healthy. They toured the facility, including the walk in freezer and other areas that store food for the animals.

The students observed how the staff feeds the animals along with the training that goes with it. They spoke with a senior zoo keeper about his career including schooling, day-to-day activities, salary, the benefits about being a zoo keeper and more.

“It was fun to learn about the different jobs you can do at the zoo and why each job is important. I got to see what happens behind the scenes,” student Ashley Cameana said.
